M.o.m. The whole team!?
Att.: 758
Well – how to begin !? This awesome display was one of the best I’ve seen and will send the bookies scurrying to rewrite the formbooks. Forget all the pre-match hype about Bruce Grobelaar – once worshipped by the kop, now sadly derided by the vociferous home fans – forget Graham Roberts (ex-Spurs) etc – The headlines were well and truly stolen by what must rank as one of the most fearsome strike-forces in the country – messrs Gutzmore and Adekola.
Chesham must’ve wondered what hit them when Leon left Chesham-defender Dean Chandler standing, crossing from the right for Adekola to open his league account.
Btfc oozed with the confidence they lacked last saturday and literally tore into Chesham. I felt somewhat sorry for their to wingers who looked pretty fair but had nobody to capitalise in the centre.
Then on 31 Adekola returned the favour to his partner with a neat chip/flick over two defenders who could do no more than sandwIch Leon’s runthru resulting in a penalty. If only Leon played for England – he dispatched the penaltykick with such coolness, even ‘the penguin’ would be envious – Grobelaar just watched the ball fly into the top-right corner, probably thinking Roger Cook would turn up at any moment!
At half time, the lethargic Denton was replaced by the useful Darren White and Btfc turned up the gas – St. Hilaire continued his sparkling wingplay, fully justifying his selection. Then came the proverbial ‘cherry on the cake’ – on 57 Adekola picked the ball up from the left to ferociously bend the ball past a desperate Grobelaar from full 20 yards – a candidate for goal of the season alongside his friendly debut – sheer class and reminescent of Brazil at their best – no kidding!
In the end, Chesham looked like Boy George after going 10 rounds with Tyson, and even Grobelaar’s last-ditch antics failed to cheer the few miserable Chesham fans as they slunk home into the night.
A great team performance – 10/10 ! I’m reluctant to award an mom – although St. Hilaire and Adekola were special – Dean Parratt was not quite up to his usually high standard (a case of ‘norwegian blues’ ?!), but this was truly a night to remember for the decent 850 crowd to cherish. Now follow that. Bring on ‘the sutton !!’
