Match report: Paul Bakewell
MOM: n/a – good team performance.
Match verdict: 8/10 – good result marred by the pitch condition and a poor referee.
Dagenham & Redbridge: Gothard, Cole, Pratt, Howard, Goodwin, Blackford, Game, Cobb 63 pen (Miller),Shipp, Springett, Broom.
BTFC: Root, Goldstone, Davidson, Moore, Waters, St Hilaire, Ridout 80, Parratt 71, Adekola, Gutzmore, Payne
In spite of a torrential downpour just prior to kickoff that threatened get the ame called off and an inept display of refereeing from mr Ray Lee of Brentwood (I wonder if there’s a mr Brent Wood of Rayleigh?), BTFC powered their way to another win to put them 5th in the table – not bad for a team the bookies made favourite for relegation!
Daggers started well forcing Root to make some saves, following some hesitance in the box. The middle of the pitch was awash and more suited to ‘Eric the Alibut’ than good football. It took both sides ten minutes to realise that wingplay was required. Pratt and Mitchell forced Root to make further saves in the second half when finally the deadlock was broken by a penalty from a Ridout being judged to handball a cross from the right.
Cobb sent Root the wrong way and I really thought Daggers would capitalise and continue as our ‘bogey side’. ‘Au contraire’, and Parratt rubbed it in for his old club by striking a 25 yard free kick in from the left with a deflection from home defender Blackford on 71.
Town continued the pressure and were rewarded on 80 when Ridout struck home from a tight angle following a well-executed free-kick from Goldstone. An unhappy Paul Cobb was substituted with 15 minutes to go, but it was all over for Daggers.
A neanderthal-looking Daggers supporter sloped off looking extremely depressed, as well he might. At long last – a win at the dreaded Victoria Ground!
