Lowly fixture/lowly football – a match best forgotten, but a win thru to the next round. Town rewarded the faithful few travelling blues with what must be the luckiest result that would make Bill Clinton envious.
On a warm but blustery evening on the south coast the Worthing supporters must wish that the town coach had stuck firmly in the horrendous jam on the M25 that saw four team-members only just make it.
Football from both sides was negligible in a first half which saw Town struggle to make one shot. I can only observe that lowly Worthing’s style of play sucked us in accordingly.
The second half livened up only to see Towns goal literally get peppered with hots leaving both sets of supporters in disbelief that the ball didn’t cross the line.
John Kendall had seized this fixture as an opportunity to play some different players – a decision admirably rewarded with a fine solo effort by the new no.2, Blaney, which proved to be battling Worthing’s downfall. Payne at long last justified his selection with some good wingplay and crosses which the lacklustre Gutzmore failed to convert on a couple of occasions.
Relieved Town fans left smiling with the knowledge that if Town continue to win games like this and at Daggers last saturday, then good league and cup runs will not be beyond us.
