Well, the game everybody was waiting for – did it live up to expectations ? I have to say, ‘not quite’. A fine afternoon, with plenty of support, the Town fans in fine voice and a great start. That man Adekola picked the ball up and without looking up, struck a vicious shot from some 25 yards and the ball hit the underside of the bar and into the goal on 2 minutes!
The ‘Shots keeper, players and fans alike were stunned. Rather than capitalise, Town continued to dominate the first half but squandered several good chances, the best from Gutzmore on 15 when faced with an open goal from no more than a couple of yards out, Leon chose to scoop the ball over the bar. Earlier on 6 ‘The saint’ saw a fine cross and header narrowly miss. Adekola could have added to his tally on 32 – over the bar – and 46 – saved.
Leon was strangely subbed on 43 for Battram – he was playing ok – again Payne wasn’t- and the team ‘lost shape’ thereafter.
As Town weakened, the ‘Shots, to their credit, continued to hoof the ball forward to the big-scoring Narty who’d been easily thwarted by the ever-present Moore. ‘Shots best player – little Hathaway came on for the bad-tempered Harper, who’d been booked on 15.
I hate to use the cliche ‘game-of-2-halves’, but this was it ! ‘Shots kept pushing till they were rewarded with a fine effort from Chewins half-hour into the second half. The ‘Shots were visibly relived, having lost their last two games and dropping down the table -this would have been a ‘killer’.
A Town second goal earlier on could possibly have clinched it -Instead we were relieved when ‘Shots pressure almost paid off when a heavily disputed Moore hand went up and surely touched the ball from a cross from the left. A recalcitrant George Borg ran onto the pitch in a fit of rage and he may’ve been booked. At the end a fair result with Town at third (both Sutton and Aylesbury winning).
