Unfortunately this cup tie will be remembered by the hardy hundred or so supporters for the foul weather and the long haul. Having left New Lodge just after 10, we finally arrived to a soggy, but playable Worcester ground at 2.40 pm.
Torrential downpurs failed to stop this and it was a case of ‘damage limitation’ with a makeshift side struggling badly until a dramatic change half-hour from the end. Not only did we pull one back with a fine Adekola struck header from an excellent run and cross from Saint on the right, but we very nearly equalised with a last gasp free kick.
The first half was ‘backs-to-the wall’ with Moore and Waters doing their level-best to prevent Worcester’s lively forwards from breaking thru. Sadly both goals came from headed in corners, our miffield in tatters with both Ridout & Parratt injured. The turning point came when Hooker was brought on (at last !), to give us the width we sadly lacked.
However, as soon as he was on a corner was taken and ee were 2-0 down. We were a team transformed as Town tore into the Worcester defence – they looked truly rattled. Yet another excellent signing (where do they come from ?), in the form of Charles for the purposeful but lacking Barry. This guy looked hot, crashing into tackles and really livening the hitherto poor Town side.
He nearly capped it with a debut goal when he strucka vicious shot from 25 yards just over the bar. however, it was all a little too late & the bedraggled fans sloped off for the long journey home. The good news is if we can produce the same form in the league tonite as we did the last half hour things will be good!
